Hey everyone? This is not okay. In May, the US government officially adopted a policy separating children from their parents when they crossed the border. It was meant to act as a deterrent to anyone seeking to immigrate to this country. Don’t come with your kids, or we’ll arrest you and take your children away. Children should never be used as political pawns like this. It’s inhuman and cruel.

One man killed himself after being taken away from his family

Children who do get placed in homes with families don’t know when they will see they parents again

The UN has said that this policy violates international law

Parents, after being separated from their children, are being tried as criminals. According to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, “If you cross the Southwest border unlawful, then we will prosecute you. It’s that simple” So not only are families being torn apart, parents are being sent to jail. It’s really hard to be reunited with your child if you are in federal prison.

Please pay attention to what is happening at our southern border. Please care about these people. I know there is a lot gong on in the world, and it’s hard to care about everything all the time, but please don’t forget about the immigrant families. Call you representatives. Vote the people who support this policy out of office in November. Find a local rally/protest. Donate to a charity. Don’t let the people in power get away with this.

It’s already been a rough morning. I checked my phone this morning and saw the headline not for the above, but for Anthony Bourdain passing at 61 (suicide). His shows were so inspiring. So much more than just food or travel. About exploring the world and valuing people and cultures different from your own. A needed voice in these times.

My Twitter was interspersed with news about him and the latest ways in which the GOP is destroying our country. They are (1) trying to kill Obamacare AGAIN via the courts. And this would happen after midterms. They are trying to kill the pre existing conditions clause. People, depression is just one of many thing that is considered “pre-existing”. (2) they’ve defunded the CHIP program funding. That is funding for children’s healthcare program. Children. You know, those lives the GOP professes to love so much by denying reproductive rights to women?

The GOP is despicable. Depraved. Immoral.

Voting these vultures out of office is literally a life or death decision this November. PLEASE research your candidates. CONTACT your current legislators and make them hear your voice on the matters you care about. We have let our legislators get away from doing OUR work. They are our elected servants. Take back your power. Become involved.

ICE Wants to Be an Intelligence Agency Under Trump

kontextmaschine:

I have been rolling my eyes at a lot of the “ICE will be the spearpoint of the new Trumpian reich” stuff coming out of the left recently but this… is actually something worth keeping an eye on.

“The Government” is not a monolithic whole but a semi-integrated collection of squabbling feifdoms and “The FBI is the agency in charge of federal domestic policing/repression” is a descriptive statement, not a normative one. At various points in American history the equivalent role’s been filled by the US Marshals, the US Postal Inspection Service, Treasury Department agents – the Secret Service and “revenuers” presaging the modern BATF. For a while in the Gilded Age it was the Pinkerton National Detective Agency acting directly under leading capitalists with the government cut out of the loop entirely.

The FBI’s 20th century preeminence was not foreordained but a consequence of bureaucratic maneuvering in reaction to specific moments and events – the anarchist wave of the early 1900s; WWI; the First Red Scare; Prohibition; the early automobile-era motorized bandit gangs; the Kansas City Massacre (before which the FBI didn’t carry guns or make arrests); WWII; the rise of TV (and J. Edgar Hoover’s cooption of same); the Second Red Scare; COINTELPRO; Cold War cocaine ‘80s Miami; the 1993 Waco seige (starting as a backfired ATF attempt at profile-raising and positioning in the face of Clinton-era budget trimming).

And now, with the FBI and the old-line three letter agencies at loggerheads with the elected executive and his party in Congress, a young upstart agency known for its enthusiastic loyalty to said executive, in the middle of a massive staffing-up, bids to expand its capabilities and portfolio…

that’s exactly the scenario under which things might change
