How about the families of the victims of the Portland Train Stabbing? How about the families of the victims from the Charleston Church shooting? How about the family of Trayvon Martin? Michael Brown? Philado Castile? Eric Gardner? Tamir Rice? Sandra Bland?

Or mention how immigrant populations in the US have lower crime rates than, and undocumented immigrants are a full 25% less likely to commit homicide than, born-citizens.

but previously, minors could only be detained (unaccompanied) for 20 days, due to the 1997 Flores agreement. with this EO, the families will be kept together, including the babies and toddlers. adults have already been kept indefinitely, so now the kids will be too. it’ll probably be challenged but it’s been suggested by a few immigration lawyers that this was the plan all along

This is not just sloppiness or indiscipline. The essence of Trumpism is dominance and punishment of those outside the tribal fold. It is probably even wrong to call this a policy of deterrence. It’s a policy of punishment. At the most basic level folks like Miller, Sessions, Trump want to show they are kicking ass at the border, against lawless non-white people. They want to do it and they want to show they are doing it. For them doing it doesn’t matter unless you show it. It’s what a TPM Reader identified as the essence of Trumpism: ‘performative cruelty‘.
