X-Men: Evolution tho

animaliachordata:

I feel like people are forgetting how great this show is so I want to remind you all that:

  • Mystique was literally every new character and every other villain
  • I’m not kidding. New student? Mystique. The principal? Mystique. That Scottish punk rocker? Mystique.
  • That bird? Also Mystique. If someone is not a main character then they are Mystique.
  • Sometimes if someone is a main character they are still Mystique, like the episode where it turns out that Professor X was Mystique for the whole season
  • Magneto menacingly twirls paperclips in the air in like half the scenes
  • Magneto refuses to stand and instead floats at all times, even if it’s just an inch above the ground
  • Magneto is only shown as a helmet hiding in the shadows for the entire first season
  • Storm is boss as hell and was worshiped as a goddess when she was younger
  • There was an episode where all of the girls lowkey started a gang and tore shit up and kicked the asses of villains more effectively than the entire X-team did for the whole series???
  • Wolverine and Sabretooth fought every time they saw each other. In the mall? On top of a parking garage? While on motorcyles? Fight WITH THE MOTORCYCLES? Like they could literally smell one another miles away and they would run through the whole city just to fight one another, it’s ridiculous
  • The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants crashed a high school soccer game once
  • Everyone in the Brotherhood is a sassy asshole and I love it, esp Quicksilver
  • Professor X is completely unfit to supervise children but people keep giving him their children to supervise
  • Including his own son, whom he, predictably, also failed to supervise
  • There was an episode where hunters caught Beast because they thought he was Bigfoot
  • Right before Jean was going to confess her ~feelings~ to Scott Mystique fucking kidnaps him and throws him to wolves in the desert lol. Professor X also refused to believe another fucking telepath when she said Scott was in danger
  • One of the characters joins a cabal of sewer mutants after he is disfigured by drinking soda that functions as mutant poison
  • Magneto had some secret headquarters at a ski resort
  • Blob knows how to make radish roses
  • The show is surprisingly positive and has great female characters and also some really good commentary about marginalized groups???
  • It’s also really true to the comics and does a lot of great side characters justice
  • Wolverine is like two feet tall in the show, just like in the comics, he’s a great angry munchkin tbh

Virginia Hall (1906-1982): The Most Dangerous Spy of All

Book 2 available here. Full entry on the website – with footnotes and citations  – available right here. Art notes after the cut.

I can’t believe I forgot to mention this (blame not sleeping all night) – her story is already in development as a film. Daisy Ridley (Rey from Star Wars) is set to play Virginia. More here.

This movie has been in various states of development for like a decade, but I think it’s got incredibly good odds of being in the current development climate.

And while we’re here, have a cute picture of Virginia and Paul (he’s the one on the right). The other two pictured are OSS reinforcements who came in along with Paul, but neither stuck around very long – so I relegated their presence in the story to a footnote.

Some hard to swallow truths of reading:

  • Not every book is written for you.
  • Just because you don’t enjoy a story doesn’t make it bad or worthless.
  • Just because you don’t enjoy a certain writing style does not make it bad or worthless.
  • It is not your duty to directly tell a writer you didn’t enjoy their work if they didn’t ask you for your feedback.
  • It is your duty to do you best to understand whether or not a story has been written for you and review it appropriately.

To the illogical and useless paperclip who thinks being kind and respectful to other people on the internet is a ‘bad system’:

A bad system is writers receiving feedback from random readers they haven’t vetted, don’t know the reading habits or credentials of, and can’t tell if fit in their target audience.

A bad system is writers being hurt and driven away by negative feedback given to drafts the writer hasn’t finished editing yet and wasn’t ready for critique on.

A bad system is young writers overwhelmed by conflicting feedback because reviewers can’t understand when a story isn’t meant for them and claim the things other readers enjoyed are objectively terrible and need to be changed.

A bad system leads to amateur writers who pull out their hair trying to accommodate for cruel reviewers because they’ve been told all feedback is equal, and matured writers who refuse all feedback because they learned through blood and tears that all feedback isn’t equal but were too drowned in useless and unwanted feedback to find the better feedback mixed in.

A bad system creates unnecessary tension and bitterness between readers (and writers) simply because they don’t all enjoy the same type of story, and are clinging to the notion that liking the other type of story means the other readers aren’t intelligent enough to understand true literature.

A bad system leads to anger, distrust, and seclusion.

A good system leads to growth, encouragement, and community.

Great sculpturists, architects, and producers do not create amazing works because they let just anyone passing by critique their work. They do it by getting feedback from select peers, mentors, and friends with relavent opinions. The process isn’t any different for writers just because the internet made it easier for readers to shout directly at them.

tbh if you’re ever in a position where you think everyone else needs to change their behavior to accommodate you, you’re probably the asshole in the room. If you think writers just need to grow a backbone, you’re probably the asshole. if you find that people are regularly avoiding your criticism or regularly in shambles after your comments, YOU’RE the asshole

your word isn’t gospel. you don’t know as much as you think you do. while it’s okay to leave criticism, you’re not god’s gift to any given writer who’s unlucky enough to stumble upon your ego-driven path.

(sorry i have a lot of opinions about this but this is a very good post)
