listen okay i know that that ferris wheel kiss was the iconic and epic and perfect and beautiful mainstream gay kiss we needed, but you know what really got to me when it came to simon and bram in the movie?

it was that super casual “good morning boyfriend” peck right at the end.

because i was prepared for the brilliance of seeing this huge epic love story played out in a mainstream movie with gay leads. i was prepared to see a groundbreaking climax that will become an iconic scene in queer cinema. with all my hype and excitement for love simon and the significance of it, i was – mostly – prepared for that.

what i was less prepared for was remembering that this mainstream teen movie finishes up with a relationship that’s familiar, and sweet, and blissfully, beautifully ordinary. love simon has changed lives with its power to normalise queer relationships, but let’s be honest, riding around on a ferris wheel for hours until your email boyfriend shows up at the last second to kiss you isn’t exactly the normal romantic experience.

greeting your boyfriend with a cup of iced coffee and a kiss, however? that’s romance as the world at large knows it. and maybe this is silly of me, but in all the holy freaking awesomeness that was the plot of this story, i kind of forgot that the world of mainstream teen cinema was, in that two second quick peck, about to see its first breathtakingly normal gay kiss between its lead characters.

i don’t know, i just kind of loved it.
